FUNDING

BBC Children in Need has devised a new strategy for its small and main grants programmes. The charity said it wanted to respond to applications more quickly. The small grants programme, which closes to applications on 1st June, awards funding of less than £10,000 over one year. Grants are awarded to UK charities and non-profit organisations that work with disadvantaged children and young people. Under the new strategy, at least 100 more small grants will be made this year. In 2012, the charity awarded 650 small grants. The programme will have five grant rounds a year, instead of the previous four, and the response time is being reduced from 14 weeks to between eight and 10. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/grants

Live UnLtd’s Be Extraordinary For A Day! Campaign is offering 11 – 21 year olds £250-£500 for projects that will tackle an issue in their area. Whether it’s bullying, litter, or lack of local activities – young people can choose something that they want to change and tell them what they would do if they had a day to change it! The closing date is 14th June. http://liveunltd.com/campaign-posts/be-extraordinary/

People’s Postcode Trust Small Grants Programme has reopened for applications. It offers grants of between £500 and £10,000 to small organisations and community groups for projects lasting up to 6 months. The Trust funds projects in Devon and in previous rounds the Trust has funded youth club equipment; a school allotment project; and play therapy sessions for children with autism. The deadline for applications is 24th May. See http://www.postcodetrust.org.uk/small-grants/am-i-eligible.aspx or ring 0131 555 7287 or email info@postcodetrust.org.uk

Esther Salisbury, One Programme Participant, Cross-Links Dover, was recently involved in organising a Churches Together event, called the Walk of Witness. Here are her reflections:

I represented Cross-Links, a community project that works in Dover, where I currently work as part of the One Programme (the Methodist Church gap-year programme). We were organising the annual Walk of Witness Event, which is an Easter Service for a massive amount of people who proceed through the town, with different aspects of the service happening at different points, and culminating at a church in the Town Centre.

In terms of participation, it really helped that I had a specific role within the project planning – I was there to represent the interests of one of the parties involved, Cross-Links, and to maintain their profile. In other words, I had a defined part to play and a reason for being there – it wasn’t just because they needed a young person. Another thing that helped was that everyone started from the same point – their attitude was to take a fresh approach to an existing project.

They also genuinely wanted my opinions. They didn’t put my opinion to one side, either by just accepting or rejecting it, anything I offered led to further discussion. I was notified of everything that was going on, and was given the same level of information as everyone else. I was actively involved in the whole project process, the planning and implementation, which meant I wasn’t just turning up to give my opinion, but an integral part of ongoing email conversations and in making the event happen. I felt that they saw me, not as a young person who was 17, but as a fellow leader, with ownership of the event.

They showed me that I could be part of leading something, alongside adults, and I was trusted to get my side of the project done, to be reliable. I was surprised at how reliant they were on me. They all seemed relaxed, as if this was normal! They took any stereotypes about my age away, they didn’t limit me, and this allowed me to fulfil my potential. I enjoyed being part of something that ran smoothly and was successful. There were parts of the project that I had been part of that were highlighted, and there was genuine praise for the contribution of the children and young people involved, but this was all done alongside, and in the context of, the broad spectrum of everyone and everything involved.

Personally, it made me learn about my ability to cope under pressure and with responsibility. It was a completely different kind of experience, which took me out of my comfort zone, because of what I was doing and who was involved – I was helping to develop a project involving a huge amount of people, and which needed to be inclusive of different denominations and approaches. I was also able to make connections and built relationships with people who have power and influence within the Circuit.

In response to our sports consultations in 2012, children and young people of the Methodist Church supported by Methodist Children & Youth are to sponsor one girls and one boys team from Nicaragua through the Casa Alianza Project to participate in the Street Child World Cup in Rio, Brazil in 2014.

Our sponsorship will not only enable the Nicaraguan teams to take part in the tournament but also the international conference for street children running alongside the football. Added to this there will be grants to the teams for advocacy and campaigning. One of the main aims of the Street Child World Cup is to create real and lasting policy change within the countries of participants and giving a grant will enable the excellent projects we are working with to campaign according to their needs.

There are lots of opportunities for children, young people and youth workers to get involved with resources available for schools and youth groups, worship and fundraising. We’re aiming to raise £30000 to sponsor the Nicaraguan teams so everyone’s contribution will be vital!

It’s going to be so much more than just raising money though and there really are some fantastic opportunities to get involved. Two young people will get the opportunity to visit Nicaragua to meet the teams, learn about their lives and share their stories, or you could be an official volunteer at the tournament itself in Rio next year, or a local ambassador in your church and community organising sports and arts based initiatives. We really want to encourage and inspire children & young people, churches, projects and communities to get active and explore the spiritual aspect of sport and justice.

TRAINING

UK Youth’s Young Parenthood Programme – this new programme is a fantastic way of working with groups of young parents (or young parents-to-be) to explore the transition from being a young person to being a young parent; looking at how their responsibilities change, the opportunities that being a parent presents and how and where they can access support. It is certificated by UK Youth and can be linked to an accredited QCF unit (at Entry 3 or Level 1). Thanks to generous funding from the Dulverton Trust, UK Youth are inviting 25 groups who work with young mums and dads across England to apply to run this programme. The funding enables them to offer you the following:
•	Up to 2 free places for workers on an ‘Introduction to Young Parenthood Programme’ training day to be held across the country
•	Free registration for your group to access the Young Parenthood Programme through UK Youth
•	A hard copy of the Training Programme for workers and PDF copies of the Learner Packs (which can be reproduced)
•	One free place on an ‘Introduction to Assessment’ training day for the lead assessor from each group
•	A UK Youth certificate of participation for each young parent who successfully completes the programme
•	Candidate registration with the awarding organisation, LASER, for up to 5 young parents who wish to achieve the QCF ‘Young Parenthood’ unit at either Entry 3 or Level 1 (although additional registrations can be bought at a cost of £35 per young person)
•	On-going support and quality assurance opportunities
•	A free place at our national Young Parenthood conference to be held on 19th November in London with opportunities for groups to showcase their work at this event
Please note that they would expect all young parents to have completed the programme by the end of 2013 to allow time to report back to the funders. Please only apply of you feel you can deliver within the timescales and resources offered. For more information please visit: http://www.ukyouth.org/accredited-learning/young-parenthood-programme.html or email yvonne@ukyouth.org. Deadline for Submission: 6th May.

Can your children and young people help?

Would the children and young people in your group be interested in helping to plan and deliver 3Generate2013?

We are looking for Children / Youth workers with their groups, to have an input, help shape and plan and possibly deliver aspects of the 3Generate event.

Last year we had a number of individuals and groups who were involved in the consultation beforehand as well as facilitating workshops, planning and delivering the worship and other sessions too. There are many ways to be involved and we would like to include as wide a range of children / young people as possible.

Can you help?

As a worker, whether you have a shaper group or not there are still other ways to get involved. We are specifically looking for adult workers/leaders who can deliver the programme in the 8-11 stream, and those who can work with young people to facilitate workshops in the 11-18 streams.

If you, as a worker, have individuals or a group who would be interested in being a ‘3Gen Shaper Group’ then please contact us for more details childrenandyouth@methodistchurch.org.uk

.
